Body Freedom Collaborative Announces
Seattle Nude Swims for 2007 - 2008 Winter Season

The Body Freedom Collaborative (BFC) will be joining other local groups in hosting indoor clothing-free swim nights, starting in November 2007 and running possibly through April 2008.  Tentatively, the plan is to resume rentals of Ballard Pool (the one with the large hot tub and rope swing we used last year).  Essentially, these will be the same format as the NAC Seattle Swims of 2006/2007, running on the second Saturday of each Month, 8-10 PM. So to begin with, that would be:
Sat, Nov 10, 2007, 8-10 PM Ballard Pool
Sat, Dec 08, 2007, 8-10 PM Ballard Pool

Instead of raising money for NAC, we will be raising seed money for future indoor swims (which we did not do last year) and, we hope, enough money to help fund past and future BFC collaborative projects (Nude Beaches Yes! Campaign, World Naked Gardening Day (WNGD), World Naked Bike Ride Seattle (WNBR), the Naked Freedom Film Festival (NFFF), Free Beach Trilogy, Magnuson Beach Bares, Annual Polar Bare Dips, and other fun collaborative projects).

Note: We will have more or less the same restrictions for attendance as before. You might want to dig up those old blue NAC Seattle Swim cards to make things a bit easier for us.

More information will be coming soon.  (Be sure to check back for more swims in 2008)
For an idea of what to expect, refer to the older NAC Seattle Swims web site at http://SeattleSwims.org/NAC/
These dates and times will also be posted at the Naked Wikia Pacific NW Events Calendar:   http://naked.wikia.com/wiki/PNW_calendar

NAC Announces Nude Seattle Swims
An important focus of the Naturist Action Committee (NAC) is working proactively with local activists to expand clothing-optional opportunities. One of NAC's present projects is a series of nude swims at public pools in Seattle, Washington.

NAC SEATTLE SWIMS

In close cooperation with the Seattle-based Body Freedom Collaborative, The Naturist Action Committee is happy to announce the "NAC Seattle Swims": a new series of evening nude swims in Seattle, Washington.

Many naturist groups have organized swimming events in private health clubs and other private facilities. A much smaller number have been able to use public facilities. NAC is particularly excited to sponsor this series of events and initiate the nude use of two fine indoor public swimming pools that are run and operated by the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of Seattle.

The NAC Seattle Swims will further the existing good relations between NAC, local skinny-dippers, and the City of Seattle. The nude swims will also serve as fundraisers for NAC, to assist it in its ongoing work of advancing and defending opportunities for responsible clothes-free recreation at private sites and on select public lands.

The swims will also be a whole lot of fun.

A FEW DETAILS

NAC board member Mark Storey and BFC co-director Daniel Johnson are organizing the swims. They selected the pools on the basis of the facilities' ease of access, the pools' amenities, and neighborhood safety. Helene Madison Pool in northwestern Seattle has two pools: one is of 3.5 feet deep; the larger pool ranges from 6 to 12.5 feet
deep, and offers both low and high diving boards.  Ballard Pool is located in the Ballard District of Seattle, and boasts a large pool (3-12 feet deep) featuring a tube slide and rope swing. A large hot tub sits next to the pool.

All swims are on the second Saturday of the month, and go from 8:00-10:00 PM.. People may arrive 15 minutes early to undress in the men's and women's changing rooms (each containing coin-operated lockers). Swimmers need to bring their own towels and any personal swim gear.

Swim organizers plan to schedule games for kids, and more athletic competitions for adults. The Naturist Society will provide prizes for some of these events at each of the six swims.

SLUGS Extends Nude Swims through May 2006

Due to the popularity of the SLUGS Nude Swims - which are attended by at least 40 people each month - the swims are now extended through May, 2006.  That means there still remains a swim in April as well as May for this wet spring.  These swims are open to SLUGS members and their guests, as well as all members of TNS, AANR, and other recognized nudist clubs.

Sunny Rest Lodge (Pennsylvania) applies for Liquor License

A story was forwarded to the CO Digest from "The Morning Call", a newspaper serving the Pocono area of Pennsylvania, and described that
Sunny Rest Lodge, built in 1945, had applied for a liquor license.

According to the story:  "co-owner Myra Mesher said Monday she hopes serving liquor will attract new guests to the Palmerton area resort
as well as provide a service for longtime guests.

''We have plans of selling [liquor] in our nightclub and restaurant by the pool area,'' Mesher said. ''We've been a BYOB for years.''
Guests to the nudist resort have been permitted to bring their own liquor on premises for the past 30 years or more, Mesher said."
A public hearing has been scheduled for the license, but we have heard no public outcry from our sources in the area.

SLUGS Nude Swims
Changed to Saturday Nights

The SLUGS Nude swims have been changed to Saturday nights.  Friday nights were tough for many people to make it, so now they are on the Second and Fourth Saturday nights.  The swims are open to all "card carrying" naturists and nudists.  That is - if you are a member of any member of a landed or travel naturist or nudist club, or if you are an at large member of either The Naturist Society (TNS) or the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR) then you are welcome to attend the swims.  So, please be prepared to show your current membership card.  In addition, SLUGS members may bring one guest (individual or couple) per night.  The "donation" is $10.00 per night.  Please bring your own towel.  The facility is in the City of Shoreline and the hours are from 7:00 pm to 11:45 pm.  Lights out at midnight.

Nude Viewing Night at UNCLAD 2005 Art Exhibit

The SLUGS have once again arranged for a nude viewing night of this year's UNCLAD 2005 art exhibit held at the Gallery at Utsalady Bay on Camano Island.   All "Card-Carrying" nudists and naturists are invited to attend this private viewing time of 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM on March 26, 2005.  It is hoped to have some models and artists working there, and you may even get the opportunity to try your hand at life drawing.  Requested donation of $5.00 per person to cover the costs of the models.  Light refreshments to be served.  See UNCLAD 2005 for further information on the exhibit and for driving directions.  Be sure not to miss this once-a-year event.

Nude Night at the Bania

The Russian bania is much like the Finnish sauna in the basic elements, but the construction and other details bring about a definite departure.  We in the Seattle area are lucky indeed to have a group of individuals that decided to create an authentic Russian bania, and hired architects and workers knowledgable in the traditional techniques to design and construct the facility known as Banya 5.   It is spacious, has very friendly and helpful staff, provides keyed valuables storage and a keyed locker.  Towel service is included and loaner flip-flops are available if you forget yours. They do require flip-flops or shower shoes when moving around the facility – not a bad idea anywhere.  Parking is reasonable to find, with a small lot plus on-street parking in the area.

As any good “sweat bath” facility should, Banya 5 has a cold (55 degrees F) plunge pool, and a relaxing room where you could lay down as well as a socializing room with tables and chairs.  In addition, there was a salt water pool just slightly cooler than body temperature.  This made a wonderful place to both begin and to cool down more slowly than the cold pool.  Within the same room, there were two “industrial strength” showers with water pipes about 1-1/2 inches leading to them.  The water temperature was controlled to a good shower temperature.  There was also a hot tub whirlpool – although fairly small.

For those that like a true steam room, it has probably the finest steam room I’ve ever been in.  I normally don’t like steam rooms, but this one seemed somehow different.  Maybe it was a high quality steam generator, maybe it was the slight hint of Eucalyptus in the steam – whatever it was, it was the most comfortable and pleasurable steam room I’ve ever used.

Let’s get back to the title – Nude night at the Bania.  Banya 5 reaches out to people’s comfort level by offering a nude night for men, a nude night for women, a family time on Sunday, and the rest of the time is Co-ed.  Unfortunately, there is no Co-ed nude time.  But – that was really the main reason for my visit to Banya 5,  to discuss with the partner and General Manager how we might get a designated Co-ed clothing optional time slot (Policy is officially "clothing is NOT optional" as of 3/16/2006).  What I found was that he was a card-carrying TNS member, and really wanted to have such a night – if only he could get a reasonable attendance at it.  I told him of the potential size of the market in this area, and that there was a pent-up demand for some sort of venue since the demise of the nude swims at the SAC in north Seattle.

So, here’s the deal – they are willing to open one night a month for a co-ed clothing optional night – if he can get upwards of 20 people attending.  My part is to get the word out to all the naturist and nudist clubs in Washington, Oregon, and Vancouver, B.C. to see if we can generate enough interest to get his minimum need.    This is really a first in this area having a commercial establishment open up for nude use.  We are only advertising to established clubs (landed and travel – as well as at-large TNS and AANR members) – and not advertising to the general public. You must present a current membership card at the door for admission.  We feel that this will provide us a wonderful opportunity to develop a monthly nude activity.

Details - The first target night is Monday, March 28, 2005 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM.  It is located at 217 9th Avenue North - Cross street is John - and is a block north of Denny Park.  I know – Monday night isn’t the most convenient, but they are normally closed Monday, and this way he doesn’t impact his normal schedule or his regular customer base.  This is an authentic Russian bania – a high quality experience in a first class facility.  As such, it comes at a price - $25.00 – so we need to have some commitment of at least 20 people who will come to this first event.  Please email me at banya5night@slimetrail.org with your commitment to attend the March 28th event.  Or, if you don’t have email, please mail me at 1911 SW Campus Drive, #203, Federal Way, WA 98023, but please don’t just say “I’m interested” – we need a commitment on your part to make this work.  If we don’t have a sufficient number, it won’t happen.  I think once you try out the whole package, you’ll be very pleasantly surprised and hopefully want to continue it.  Ideally it will be scheduled monthly  – but give it a try this first time, and let’s see if we can’t get this to be a regular event.  Please note that to be admitted you must show a current membership card in an organized nudist club or a TNS or AANR membership card.

Third Landslide Reaches the Top

Origin of Slide: Closer to Marine Residences Construction.

December 9, 2004:  A Third landslide occurred on the cliff face below the UBC Marine Student Residences construction site.  Much larger than the previous two slides of June 21 and November 7, this cliff failure is the third since UBC began construction activities for the Marine Student Residences  in June . However, this third slide originated much closer than  previous slides to the top of the cliff, and thus, also closer to the construction site.

Prior to UBC beginning construction of Phase I of the residences in June 2004, there had been no documented slides for the past five years on that part of the cliff face!  The three landslides that have occurred since construction began demonstrate increasing frequency and magnitude.

The November  landslide wiped out  a considerable swath of cliff face vegetation.

The Wreck Beach Preservation Society and the Pacific Spirit Park Society remain concerned about permanent damage to the park including cliff stability, loss of viewscape from the beach, and impact on wildlife and birds posed by habitat loss and migration hazards.

Meanwhile, UBC continues construction with apparent disregard for the fragile bluffs and ecosystem.

Massive Landslide on Cliffs above Wreck Beach
WAKE-UP CALL FROM MOTHER NATURE TO UBC!
From: WBPS
UBC just doesn't get it.  Mother Nature tried to warn UBC pundits with a minor slide June 21, 2004 soon after the initiation of Phase I of the Marine Towers Residence project.  Given UBC's absolute disregard for a 21,000-person petition along with 432 letters from around the world, Mother Nature sent a second, "louder"  warning this week through a massive cliff-face failure immediately below the Marine Residences site!  What will UBC do next?  Demand that GVRD destroy parkland through cliff-face armament to protect buildings that shouldn't be built there in the first place?!!  See the Wreck Beach Preservation Society's webpage for full details.

2nd Annual Rooster Rock Polar Dip
Submitted by: Shirley Gauthier

Mark your calendars for Saturday, January 29 and join Rooster Rock nude beach supporters in braving the mighty Columbia River.  We will meet at the East end parking area at noon.  That's 12 sharp!   It's a great opportunity to gather a group, car pool to the Columbia Gorge and support the clothing optional beach at (http://www.oregonstateparks.org/park_175.php) Rooster Rock. Restful Haven Health Club www.cybernude.com/restful has provided a great mascot for the Polar Dip.  Come join us for a group photo with the mascot!

Last year Mike Parker, Ron Coyle, Mark Buchweitz, Kevin Lough and Shirley Gauthier braved the elements to enter the mighty Columbia.  Bob Burns showed up late and cheered for us.  For reasons only they know someone else will be in charge of making a large sign for the photo shoot.  In looking back at the Polar Dip photo taken Feb. 7, I noticed snow on the mountains in the background.  This year's dip is one week earlier so hopefully the wind the Gorge is so proud of will be kind to us. Anyone have a suggestion for a place to gather for coffee or food after the dip?  Sending an emaill if you plan to participate or cheerlead would be very helpful.  Shirley

Now those of you who do not live close enough or are not brave enough are probably asking yourself "How can I participate if I can't be there or simply not brave enough?" Listed below are ways you to can participate without getting wet.

1.    Show up and be a cheerleader.  Offer a pep talk. Take the group photo.  Bring the sign.
2.    Purchase a raffle ticket for Henry Yuen fundraiser. Simply make out a check for $5 (each $5 is one entry) to AANR-NW GAT and mail it to:
Shirley Gauthier
Willamettans
PO Box 969
Marcola, Oregon 97454.

Donated funds are used to promote, preserve and protect nudist rights in the Northwest.

BFC "Bare As You Dare" Beach Rally a "Success"

The goal for this rally was to generate public awareness of 1) the Seattle area has no clothing optional beaches, 2) To point out that California, Oregon, and British Columbia all have CO beaches, 3) to get as much publicity as possible, and 4) to have fun at the beach..  Considering that it was not an objective necessarily to be nude at this beach (although we would have loved to be able to do so) then we must classify this rally as a success.

There were articles in the local Magnolia News, in the Seattle Times, and even the Washington DC Post.  There were announcements as early as the Monday before the rally on Saturday that it was going to happen.  During the rally there were TV Cameras for Channels 4, 5, 7 and 13.  Each of these stations carried news after the event.  Articles were also carried after the event in newspapers.

One Magnolia resident and a woman (his wife I believe) had been quoted in the newspapers as saying he would be there and "would be offended" so that he could complain to the police.  He was there and there were no less than 4 Seattle police officers on foot, a large Police boat, and a small Police boat. Mark Storey spoke with the police and they assured him that they would arrest anyone who got nude.  Based on that and on the goals to get publicity, have fun, and that this was just one step in a series of steps to actually have a clothing optional event, Mark recommended that no one get nude - unless they actually wanted to get arrested.  All of us chose to stay with our bathing suits on - gee it was wierd to see so many nudists with swim suits on - so we played a number of beach games, from tug of war to tossing a ball with a blanket and shooting it with a gigantic sling shot through a hoop.  Then some of us who are not cold sensitive enjoyed the water with a lively game of frisbee.

Unfortuantely, one man - whom had just moved here from Texas where he had lived in a clothing optional apartment comples - came after Mark's announcement and chose to be nude on the beach.  Quite frankly, I'm not sure how the "complainer" could even see him since they were separated by about 75 yards, up a bank with 3 - 4 ft tall grass, and the nude man was sitting on a log facing the water reading a book.  Anyway, he was arrested and taken away.  I talked with the police and they agreed that they would really rather be somewhere else.  As a group of us got back to the parking lot, we noted a cab with a person getting out.  He was the "arrested guy" so we talked to him a bit.  He was taken to the West Seattle police station where they put him in a holding cell for about 20 minutes, then brought him out and told him he was free to go.  He said they told him he might or might not get a call from the City Attorney.  (Note that he was not issued a citation or actually charged with anything.)  We know that the City Attorney has been unwilling to actually take anyone to court for nudity for the last 4-5 years.  Since the City of Seattle operates under the Revised Code of Washington and since the RCW says that the person must have "intent" to offend, etc. (and it is very difficult to prove intent) then it is my personal opinion that nothing more will come of this case.

I did speak with the Magnolia resident and he says he has no problem with an area somewhere being designated for "clothing optional use" and signed as such.  Then if he saw the sign and went in anyway, he would still be offended but it would be his problem.  He says if we want a nude beach we should work through the proper channels.  Well - that is what we are doing.  We're not forcing it down anyone's throut.  We are currently in an awareness raising state, and showing the support for such a beach.  The formal channels will be followed later.

Therefore, I declare this rally to be a success.

SLUGS RECEIVE AANR CHARTER

The SLUGS are now officially chartered by the American Association for Nude Recreation (AANR) by action at the just concluded 2004 AANR Convention held at Glen Eden, CA.

Not only that, but we are the only club that received their charter at this convention that carries a vote.  It pays to plan ahead.

It was gratifying to know that the SLUGS are well known and respected in this region.  The AANR-NW regional president knows the group and a lot of the people in his region. If not personally, then by reputation. The SLUGS regularly help and support Rooster Rock cleanups, support Wreck Beach, support of NAC and Government Affairs, at LARC, Lk Bronson & FS were not overlooked by others in the Northwest.  The reputation of the SLUGS as an active, get in and help get it done naturist group is being firmly established.

On another note - for those that plan ahead - DeAnza Springs has been chosen to host the 2006 AANR convention.  For those who are not aware, DeAnza Springs is 75 miles east of San Diego and was where Claudia had her nude wedding.  Monday, August 10 through Sunday August 16, 2006 are the dates chosen.

NAKED BEACH RALLY ANNOUNCED!

By Daniel Johnson:

Yay! We are pleased to announced a very special celebration coming up soon for the development of clothing-optional beaches in the Greater Seattle Area!

On Saturday, September 4, 2004 we will meet at 9:30 AM, Swim at 10 AM (high tide) - This is the big rally event we have been planning all summer! Its a massive Community "As Bare as You Dare" Beach Rally at Seattle's Discovery Park on the north beach (on the stretch of beach just north of the lighthouse). Enjoy bodypainting, beach games, and fellowship with others who are feel strongly about local public lands initiatives.  This is a clothing optional swim and rally and we want to encourage everybody to come down and have fun and be counted as a
visible supporter of the development of clothing-optional beaches in the Seattle area. We are hoping to get some local Northwest Free Beach speakers for the event.

This is part of a long-term campaign that BFC is working together on with other groups to help improve the availability of clothing-optional beaches for as many people as possible, not just to those who can afford to travel long distances to other regions. The name of the campaign is tentatively called "Seattle Free Beach Campaign". If your group is interested in endorsing or collaborating on this campaign please contact us! We will be approaching many groups who have a history of support of public lands and free beach projects for your ideas and to discuss possible ways your group can express its own unique interests in the campaign. Other individuals will be approached who have contributed previously with participation in past events, ideas, promotional help, financial help, and event documentation. Beyond that we hope to bring focus of the general population to the need for local beaches and greater tolerance of the human body in general.

Here are some of the activities we are planning for the event. Do you have suggestions for other activities?

(1) 8:00 - 9:30 AM Set up area with banners, colorful flags, et cetera
(2) 9:30 AM People start showing up (leave plenty of time to get to the beach, up to 30 minutes
or more if you have not been before, we will try to provide better instructions.
Discovery Park is huge and there are trails going all over the place and
unfortunately the signage isn't the greatest)
(3) 10 AM Wade-in
(4) Rally ( we are looking for some possible local Free Beach speakers for the event )
(5) Beach games, contact us if you can help with this
(6) Bodypainting
(7) Beach cleanup after the event. Leave no trace!

SOMETHING’S  ROTTEN AT UBC

The Wreck Beach Preservation Society (WBPS) was puzzled to hear  Dennis Pavlich, VP of External and Legal Affairs for UBC say that the Phase I, Tower #1 of the Marine Residences would now move forward.  Tower I is the farthest-removed from the cliff edge in the Marine Residences proposed 4-tower complex,  and Mr. Pavlich is saying it would NOT be visible from the beach,  although the WBPS blimp was!  We are dismayed that  UBC  suggests they have tried to be “neighbourly and fair in spades,” but have never sat down with us to discuss possible alternatives to the towers.  (5/22 - added latest press releases)

PROTEST RALLY TO BE HELD AT
WRECK BEACH
Students, environmentalists, naturists, local neighbours,
and Wreck Beach friends and supporters are planning a musical, peaceful
protest against the towers for Sunday, May 9, Mother's Day, at high noon at
the "Okay Corral" or   location   of   proposed   Tower  #6, the tower
closest to the cliff's edge.  Beach musicians are enthusiastically writing
original protest lyrics, and we plan to make a joyful noise for an hour on
Mother's Day.  We anticipate hundreds of demonstrators.

EYE IN THE SKY EXPOSES UBC THREAT TO VANCOUVER’S LEGACY

On Easter Saturday, 60 protesters gathered in the footprint of a massive 20-story UBC tower to defend Vancouver’s legacy of forested cliffs by the sea. The cliffs in Pacific Spirit Regional and Stanley Parks are now all that remain of Vancouver’s original viewscape and skyline from the water and air.

Our professional Eye-in-the Sky blimp floating at 187-1/2 feet (20 stories) above the site clearly established that of the four towers planned immediately adjacent to Pacific Spirit (above the Trail 6 and estuarine area of Canada’s famed 7.8 km. long Wreck Beach), a minimum of 10 stories would be visible from Towers #5 and #6 high whereas five stories would be visible from Tower #1, farthest from the cliff top.

The farther out toward the Fraser River one goes, the more of these towers would be visible and this would be an abomination not only against nature, but against Captain Vancouver’s legacy to all Canadians and international visitors!

UBC must relocate the towers and drop their heights by a minimum of 10 stories!
